Universal Electronics to Highlight Tradition of Innovation at the
2010 International Consumer Electronics Show

Jan 4, 2010 |
Welcoming the new wave of converging ecosystems in the home with a Comprehensive Array of Advanced Wireless Radio Frequency (RF) Control Solutions
CYPRESS, Calif., Jan 04, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- For the 18th consecutive year, Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) (NASDAQ: UEIC) will host an exhibit at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 7 to 10, 2010. At the show, UEI will demonstrate a variety of consumer control applications leveraging emerging wireless RF technologies in the home, continuing its tradition as the leading developer of control solutions that enhance the home entertainment audio visual control experience.

Through a development relationship with Broadcom(R) (NASDAQ: BRCM), UEI will demonstrate its Glimmer advanced wireless control platform with an integrated infrared and Bluetooth(R) compatible chip solution optimized to address the emerging Bluetooth eco-system of personal and networked entertainment devices in the home. The demonstration highlights the potential of leveraging an existing network of devices in the home to connect and interact with a variety of Bluetooth-enabled devices ranging from next generation set-top boxes, game consoles, and mobile phones allowing interesting and powerful applications to emerge.

In another demonstration of its RF control know-how, UEI will showcase its Glimmer G1+ advanced controller platform integrated with the latest RF4CE-compatible communication solution enabling low power, low latency, and non-line of sight control of an emerging array of advanced user interfaces, such as those found on next generation set-top boxes as well as existing PC-based applications such as Hulu(TM) and the latest Windows 7 Media Center Edition.

Glimmer G1+ will also be used to demonstrate UEI's latest universal remote set-up application; UEI Quickset. Utilizing an RF4CE-compatible, reliable and long range bi-directional communication link between the remote and the target device, Glimmer G1+ can be programmed, using a dynamic and interactive remote control setup application, to download nearly any audio visual device code from the target device to the remote control for a future proof universal remote control solution.

On hand at the Show will be various products and services developed at UEI and deployed in the market including the Denon RC-1024 (a ZigBee(R)-based LCD screen metadata remote); the NevoS70 dual RF (WiFi(R) & Z-Wave(R)) advanced wireless touch screen controller; and the DIRECTV(R) RC64RF universal remote based on 433MHz RF technology developed at UEI.

"Universal Electronics has built a reputation as a trusted advisor in control technology applications," says Paul Arling, Chairman and CEO of Universal Electronics. "We spend a significant amount of time up front with customers to gain a thorough understanding of their particular needs and goals, and then present the technology options that fit their needs the best. In that sense, we are technology agnostic."

A recent 22-page white paper, titled "Radio Frequency (RF) Technology in Handheld Controllers: An Overview of Audio, Video, and Home Control," available at CES, provides an in-depth review of various technologies and their application to solving consumer AV problems and concerns.

The white paper identifies the major benefits and challenges of various RF technologies in use today as well as emerging technologies to watch as personal devices, home control, and Internet connections merge into the home entertainment ecosystem. Technologies examined include: Z-Wave, RF4CE, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, proprietary RF technologies, and bi-directional infrared (IR). Many of these technologies will be on display and available for personalized demonstrations at CES.

"Radio Frequency (RF) Technology in Handheld Controllers" will be available at CES or can be downloaded at http://www.uei.com/RFwhitepaper.
